Cannot go to item in filtered list by typing 1st character due to design.

Cause:

This behavior occurs because of the addition of the 'Top Ten...' feature and it is different from Excel 5.0. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Excel 7.0.

Solution:

To work around this problem, use the scroll bar in the drop-down list or use the Up or Down ARROW keys on the keyboard to move to the desired item.
